Taba is famous for its sandy bays and lagoons,
as well as its perfectly blue coastline. One of the biggest attractions
is Pharaoh’s Island, which holds remains of a fortress that was
once occupies by the Sultan Salah El-Din. Like many coasts along
Egypt scuba diving is one of the most popular activities,
and Pharoah’s Island has many reefs and underwater canyons to
explore, as well as a large range of sea life. Local dive centres
are also at hand to help with equipment and instruction, and they
may point you in the direction of the rare blac-coral reefs. However,
if you prefer keeping your feet dry, why not visit St Catherine’s
Monastery? Build in the 3rd century, the monastery boasts over
200 icons, frescoes and many ancient manuscripts. You are also
able to cross the border to Israel, and taste the local culture
there. However, this should be done during the week, as the border
shuts for Shabbat from Friday to Sunday.
Saint Catherine’s monastery
Built in the late 6th century by order of the mother of Constantine
I, it was built surrounding the Chapel of the Burning Bush. The
monastery is supposed to mark the spot where Moses saw the burning
bush and God appeared, and is a holy place for Judaism and Christianity.
The monastery is situated on the Sinai Peninsula, at the foot
of the Mount Sinai, and is made out of the mountains and granite
rock.

of all four countries that meet here; Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia
and Egypt, as well as a stunning view over the Gulf of Aqaba
