St Lucia is a tropical, Caribbean dream island; a small island
with lush vegetation and sandy beaches that is relatively undeveloped,
although does provide a large variety of accommodation for tourists
as well as a small amount of discrete resorts. St Lucia is situated
close to Barbados and is halfway down the Eastern Caribbean chain
of islands. It is small at just 27 miles long and 14 miles wide
making St Lucia holidays the ideal getaway.
St Lucia is a volcanic island whose main landmarks are the Pitons.
The Pitons are two huge peaks on the southern coast that rise
up from the sea and provide a shelter to the dense rain forest
that hides away wild orchids and gorgeous plumed tropical birds.
The Creole people of the island are friendly and visitors here
get warm welcomes to the island on which you can relax on the
secluded sandy beaches or snorkel in the many coral reefs.
Many visitors to the island are those on day-trips who arrive
on cruise-liners into the port of Castries, and who mainly shop
around for souvenirs. However, with time to explore you will be
enthralled by the wildlife, walks, cycle trails as well as the
many beauty spots on the island, which includes the Soufriere
Volcano with the bubbling sulphur springs.
Alongside the natural beauty the island has a large French flavour,
which derives from many battles between the French and British
for this tiny island, although in 1814 Britain won the war and
did not grant independence to St Lucia until 1979.

Derek
Walcott Square
This large sque is the centre point of the capital Castries, and
named after one of the islands most famous writers, who won the
Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992. The islands points of architectural
interest can be found on the square, in particular the Cathedral
of the Immaculate Conecption, whose interior is also adorned with
gold, candle light and flowers. The huge samaan tree that stands
shading the Cathedral is thought to be at least 400 years old.
Marigot
Bay
Situated 8miles south of Castries this is one of the most beautiful
bays in the Caribbean. Ideal for relaxing with a picnic on a St
Lucia holidays, this bay is also famous as a film location
for Dr Doolittle the movie. It is also a favourite point to stop
for those who are yachting and boating around the island, and
its not hard to see why. The beach here is coated in palm trees
and white sands and is unspoiled and natural.
Pigeon
Island
Pigeon Island is located north of Castries and is St Lucia’s first
every National Park. It is reached by crossing a causeway to this
islet, which holds much history and is the perfect day trip on
St Lucia holidays. It was the hide-out for Jambe
de Bois, who was a feared pirate and who preyed on Spanish ships.
It was also from here that Admiral Rodney set sail to destroy
the French fleet in 1782. Pigeon Island also has two white sandy
beaches as well a museum centre, where many multimedia displays
explain the local history. The centre here holds the Captain’s
Cellar Olde English Pub, a re-created 18th century English pub.
The island also has many nature walks as well as highlighted trails
that take you past the historical sites of the island.
