Sousse lies on the east coast of Tunisia,
just a two hour drive away from the capital Tunis. Rich in history
this magnificent town has been discovered by the Phoenicians,
Byzantines, Arabs and Romans, who all cam here for the fertile
land of this ‘pearl of the Sahel’, as it was then known. People
now come to Sousse for the warm, sunny weather
and the beaches along the Mediterranean Sea.
Sousse is also favoured by local Tunisians, who also
enjoy this vibrant destination. Hotels and other holiday facilities
line the promenade, although not detracting from the ancient city
behind. Sousse has one of the finest Medina’s (old city) in Tunisia,
and is made up of many alleyways and ancient buildings, which
hold shops and stalls that sell anything from leather goods to
carpets. The Ribat dominates over the medina, an ancient fort
that still stands today. The town’s museum tells visitors more
about the history of the area, and is situated in the old castle
(Kasbah). The catacombs are another place that is well worth visiting.
There are miles of these Christian burial chambers and tombs in
the town, offering another insight into the ancient life of Sousse.
There are many facilities on offer for holidaymakers, from water
sports to quad biking in Sousse. Hotels and tour
companies also provide holidays to suit everyone’s budget, and
there are many cheap flights to Tunisia from
the U.K, there has never been a better time to visit this gorgeous
city.
Archeological
Museum
This museum is located on the bottom floor of the Kasbah, and
has one of the largest collections of artifacts in Tunisia. Its
artifacts date from the Roman and Early Christian periods, and
give visitors a great insight into the history of the area.
Takrouna
Just 4miles from Enfida, lies the old Berber village of Takrouna,
situated on a beautiful rocky hill. It is now a popular tourist
resort, and houses a small mosque and tomb worth exploring.
Catacombs
On the outskirts of Sousse is this large complex of Early Christian
catacombs, which were found in 1888. They are a jumble of underground
alleyways that has been taken out of the rock between the 2nd
and 4th centuries. They’re the ideal day out away from the beach.
