Located on the west side of the Algarve,
Praia Da Rocha is just a 50minute drive from Faro international
airport. Once a sleepy town this resort became popular in the
1930s. In the 1970s however, many cheap flights to Portugal
began as traveling became more popular, and Praia da Rocha became
a holiday hotspot. With this came the building of many high rise
hotels as well as various holiday apartments in Praia
da Rocha.
You can see why Praia da Rocha has become so popular within the
past 50 years. It has 2km of golden sandy beaches,
as well as stunning rock formations lining the coastline which
gave it the name Praia da Rocha – ‘Rock Beach’. It also has many
facilities, as well as bars, restaurants and shops.

Fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar
Across the sea in Ferragudo, along with the fort of St John of
Arade, lies these fortifications against raiders and pirates!
Built between the 17th and 18th centuries these defences provide
excellent views over the sea, the river as well as the cliffs
for which Praia da Rocha is famous for, and a stunning place to
watch the sun set. Inside the fortress is also a small and beautiful
chapel that was dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria.
Rock Beach
The beach on Praia da Rocha lives up to its name (‘Rock Beach’
in English) - as the sandy beaches are sheltered by the cliffs.
Some of these rocks that stick out from the sand have been named
by the local people, such as ‘indented rocks’ and ‘two brothers’.
The cliffs also provide shelter and perfect conditions for those
wanting to relax on the beach, as well as for the watersports.
Boat rides are also available along the coast, giving you an extensive
view of these amazing rock formations.
