Located on the southwest coast of Cyprus, Paphos
was the capital of the island in Roman times. Legends believe
that Paphos is built in the exact location where Aphrodite, the
Goddess of love, was born. The island has a varied history, and
the many legends, raids and battles are preserved through buildings
and museums that visitors can see.
Today, Paphos is thriving on tourism, and because
of this the government has put investment into the town. There
has been a large rise in the building of accommodation, apartments
and villas, which makes sure that there is accommodation to suit
every budget. The population of the resort is around 39,500 people,
which swells during the summer period. There is a large residential
section of the city, and the area of Kato Paphos
remains more open to holidaymakers, with many facilities and activities.
This area is built around the ancient port, and includes many
facilities you would expect of a holiday resort
including cafes, bars and entertainment venues.
Tombs of the Kings
Although there are no actual kings buried on this site, there
are many elite, aristocratic men who lived and died in Paphos
between 3 BC and 3 AD. Just one mile northwest of Paphos, these
tombs are spectacular to look at, and provide a great insight
into the culture of the time. Archaeological excavations on the
site are ongoing, and keep providing more information about the
history of Paphos.
The Mosaics of Paphos
These beautiful mosaic floors were situated within the villas
of the Roman elite’s villas. They date from between the 3rd and
5th centuries AS, and are a must-see for all visitors to Paphos.
Located close to Paphos harbour, the excavation continues, and
more is known about the people that would have lived here and
their houses every day. The mosaic themselves feature Roman mythical
creatures and stories, and the attention to detail in the thousands
of mosaic cubes, known as tesserae, is amazing.
widen the range of colour. In the House of Dionysus, for example,
5,985 square feet (556 sq metres) of floor space in 14 rooms are
covered with the gorgeous mosaics
Catacombs
A pistachio tree marks the entrance to these catacombs, which
is covered in pieces of cloth tied to its branches, as it is said
this will cure ailements. Situated in Kato Paphos these catacombs
are carved into Fabrica hill, just below the Roman Wall, in around
4th century BC. Later they became small chapels for the early
Christians. These chapels feature some interesting pieces of art
and grafitti on the walls, which were left by invaders in the
13th century. There are many legends attached to the patron saint
of Avia Solomoni, for which these catacombs are for, all of which
you may find out from a visit to them – but take a torch!
