Entering Marrakech is a unique experience, as
it holds much of its ancient charms. From the small alleyways
and souks (markets) to the Medina (the old town area) it is easy
to see the culture and history of this ancient city. Marrakech
is one of Morocco’s most visited cities, and people are drawn
here every year for the busy, carnival atmosphere. The souk provides
an excellent place to find a bargain, and to haggle for one –
from carpets to jewellery there is something for everyone. In
the heart of the ancient Medina is the square (Djemaa el-Fna),
in which all mayhem is seen as people go about their everyday
lives. Aside from the vibrant traditional atmosphere, Marrakech
provides all the luxury hotels, restaurants and shops that make
up of city life!
Marrakech is rich in history, and was established in 1062, by
Youssef bin Tachfine of the Almoravide dynasty. He set together
a many architects and craftsmen who could build the perfect palaces,
baths and mosques. The city walls were also built at this time,
and were raised from the red mud of the plains. The High Atlas
Mountains provide a stunning backdrop for this ancient and historic
city.
If you want to explore the city there are many people offering
horse-drawn carriage rides, known as caleches. However, much of
the Medina’s souks are better seen on foot, as you are able to
experience the sights and smells of these vibrant markets in which
you are offered a variety of weird and wonderful objects!
Marrakech’s energetic atmosphere, deep history and warm weather
are perfect reasons to travel here. There are many offers and
last minute Marrakech deals to be found that
make Marrakech so accessible including the many cheap
flights from Marrakech to the U.K, and cheap
holiday packages. Morocco is a country not to be missed!
Koutoubia
Mosque
This mosque dominates over the winding streets of Marrakech, and
it the city’s main landmark. The Koutoubia Mosque is also known
as the ‘mosque of the booksellers’ because of the traders that
used to set up stalls close by. This stunning red stone mosque
was erected in 1147, and was demolished and rebuilt soon after
as it was not aligned with Mecca. This massive mosque has a large
prayer hall, with room enough for thousands to pray.
Saadian
Tombs
This amazing necropolis was established by the Saadian Sultan
Ahmed el Mansour in the later part of the 16th century, as a burial
place for him and his successors. Within this necropolis there
are 66 tombs, all of which are beautifully decorated with mosaic
and paint.
Djemaa
el-Fna
The massive, jumbled town square of Marrakech is known as Djemaa
el-Fna (Square of the Dead). Although it doesn’t live up to its
name, as every day there is a frenzy of people going about their
everyday lives, as well as the multitude of tourists. In addition
to this there are daily performers, snake charmers, musicians
as well as storytellers, all providing a perfect taste of the
Moroccan culture.
