This ancient town was once part of Thebes, the main ruling city
for around 1,000 years. Luxor is perfect for
holidaymakers who want to experience the ancient Egypt.
The area boasts many temples, tombs and monuments, as well as
many other buildings. Alongside this history lie the buildings
and facilities of the modern day power- tourism. There are many
hotels in Luxor, as well as shops, bars and restaurants,
which are nestled in between the stunning architecture of ancient
times. However, the tourism has not spoilt the atmosphere of the
area, and there is still a great feeling of the power and history
that happened within the city. The streets are bustling however,
with taxi drivers and tour guides as well as those offering to
help tourists. These busy streets are almost as fascinating as
the temples, which are the main attraction of the area.
The Temples of Luxor and of Karnak are within
the town itself, but the largest attractions lie on the other
side of the Nile, which is easily passable by boat. The Tombs
of the Nobles, and the Valley of the Kings and the Queens help
to tell the rich history of the area, not to be missed!
The Temple of Karnak
When the city was part of Thebes, this was the main place of worship.
Build over 1,000 years ago, this stunning structure is worth a
visit. It is claimed to be one the world’s greatest architectural
achievements, especially the Hypostyle Hall, which is filled with
pillars which are ornately painted and engraved. It also includes
the well-known Avenue of the Sphinxes and the Sacred Lake. There
are also many large statues, halls and murals to admire. Make
sure you set enough time aside to enjoy this temple and all its
beautiful architectural work.
The West Bank
This bank is a section of limestone hills and valleys, which hold
many tombs and temples. There are small settlements along the
hills, but apart from these small pieces there is not much colour
to the desert- like landscape. This is well-worth a day trip,
as there are many statues, temples and tombs to see, as well as
the well-known temple of Amenophis III.
