Lindos is the most popular resort on
Rhodes, and it isn’t hard to see why. With its historical
character, facilities and its stunning scenery, Lindos
is a perfect place to relax on holiday. With the Acropolis dominating
over the town, Lindos has many cobbled streets
and ancient buildings that set the scene for your holiday. The
Acropolis is accessed through a series of steps, or if you do
not have the energy – you can take a donkey up to the top! There
are many other attractions to be seen in Lindos, such as the temples
and Church of St John, which can all be found at the Acropolis.
Many celebrities have chosen to buy a holiday home in
Lindos, as it has the charm of an ancient village that
still has the facilities for the perfect holiday such as traditional
bars and cafes. Apart from the bars and cafes the beaches lining
Lindos also provide the perfect place to relax. They all have
golden sands, as well as blue sea, making them perfect for families.
Acropolis
This is a must for anyone on a Lindos holiday. Lindos’ acropolis
houses both ancient and medieval buildings. Through the entrance
there is a square, which is built over some underground cisterns.
A flight of steps leads up to the gate house, through which is
many buildings such as the chapel and he commandants house. The
Acropolis was built by the knights of St John, and was left in
situ when they excavated the site.
Church
of Panagia (Virgin Mary)
On the road up the the acropolis hides the church of Panagia.
Through a courtyard, which is surrounded by high walls is the
beautiful church. It was built for the Orthodox population by
Pierre d’Aubusson, who was the Grand Master of the order of St
John from 1476 to 1503. It is lavishly decorated, and has mosaic
pavements, as well as the dome containing its original paintings
from 1779.
Temple
of Athena Lindia
This temple is a small shrine, which was built in 300 BC on the
site of an earlier temple. It is built with four columns, and
its unusual location (on the edge of a cliff) suggests that the
cave below is where they formerly came to worship the goddess
Athena.
