Rich in history, this resort lays claim to the marriage of Richard
the Lionheart’s wedding. The party that went on after the wedding
is still one of legend, and it is said this party still carries
on today through Limassol’s rich nightlife. This
nightlife is also fuelled by the fact that Limassol
is the centre for Cyprus’ winemaking. There are many vineyards
and wine tasting events that happen here, making it a great place
for wine connoisseurs and drinkers alike. Within the past few
years the town has concentrated on developing and modernising
its buildings, and unlike other Cypriot cities
it is not protected its architextural and cultural heritage. This
is unfortunate, but the results have been modern hotels and excellent
facilities for holidaymakers.
Just north of the city is the foothills of the Troodos Mountains,
which offer pleasant country walks to other villages, which offer
visitors a taste of Cyprus’ culture. On the edges
of the city are also some beautiful beaches, which however belong
to hotels who charge an entrance fee. Although because of this
you are guaranteed clean and beautiful beaches on which to relax.
Another stunning beach, which is set on the British Military base,
is called Akrotiri, which is open to the public.
Cyprus Medieval Museum
Limassol Castle was built in the 14th century, and dominates over
the harbour of Limassol. It now displays the Cyprus Medieval Musuem,
which boasts a wide range of exhibits. It is a perfect place to
find out about the history and the culture of Cyprus and of Limassol
itself. The castle itself is also famous for being the place in
which Richard the Lionheart married.
Pitsilia
This makes an excellent day trip away from Limassol, and is a
great chance to explore the small villages of Cyprus. Pitsilia
is the region based at the foot of the Troodos Mountains, and
it has many small villages that produce their own local produce.
From wine to honey and cheese, it is the perfect place to sample
the delicacies of the region. The beautiful houses and painted
churches are also worth looking at, and some of them have been
turned into cafes and restaurants in which you can relax with
some local food and wine.
Troodos Mountains
The Troodos Mountains which are located north of Limassol, offer
signposted walks and stunning views. Perfect for those who love
nature there is much to see on the walks. The Artemis Trail is
4miles long and leads through the Black Pine region, in which
you can encounter some of the sub-alpine flora of the area. The
Atlanta Trail is 6miles long, and offers amazing scenery as well
as a lot of birdwatching. The Caledonia Trail is shorter, is just
2miles long, and follows the Kryo Potamo stream from Platres through
the pine forests. The last trail is known as the Persephone Trail,
named after the Greek goddess for spring. This trail is about
2miles long and offers perfect views of the area.
