Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria
and is situated on the northeast tip of the island, between two
large expanses of golden beach. The city was established in 1478
and was where Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the Americas began.
There is much of the original area remaining, which is known as
Vegueta. Within this old part of the city there are many cultural
and historical sights and museums to see.
It is supposed that Christopher Columbus stayed for varying periods
in the Casa de Colon in the historical quarter of Vegueta. His
house now serves as a museum displaying artefacts and stories
of the early transatlantic voyages and pre-Columbian cultures
in the Americas. It also acts as a cultural centre for the study
of the Americans and Canaries relationship.
The major museum in Las Palmas is called Museo
Canario, which boasts the world’s largest collection of Cro-Magnon
skulls as well as mummies. The museum also summarises the history
of Gran Canaria, from its original inhabitants to the Spanish
conquest in 15th century and onwards.
Gran Canaria also boasts four world-class golf courses,
one of whoch, El Cortijo, held the Spanish Open in 2002. This
golf-course is on the outskirts of Las Palmas, and can provide
a fabulous day of golfing on this world famous course.

Casa de Colon
Christopher Columbus was supposed to have stayed in this house
at different periods of his life, before and after setting sail
for America. His house now serves as a museum displaying artefacts
and stories of the early transatlantic voyages and pre-Columbian
cultures in the Americas. It also acts as a cultural centre for
the study of the Americans and Canaries relationship.
Pueblo Canario
This village was constructed by Canarian artist Nestor Martin-Fernandez
de la Torre. It was his project to represent an idealistic island
village in Dorames Park, Las Palmas. It makes a refreshing escape
from the lively centre of Las Palmas, and provides a great day
out away from the beach.
Museo Canario
The Canarian Museum is based on a scientific and cultural institution
founded in the late 19th century. It was set up by a small number
of citizens from the local elite who wanted to preserve as well
as research and exhibit local archaeology and documentation of
the history of Gran Canaria. This is a great cultural day out
to where you are able to learn about the history of Gran Canaria.
