Larnaca is one of Cyprus’ most popular
resorts, as it is the second port on the island, and
also boasts its own airport. It is also one of the most continuously
inhabited cities in the world, making it rich in historical culture.
As well as its ancient attractions the clear blue seas and golden
beaches makes Larnaca a popular holiday destination. Its marina
can hold 400 boats at a time, making Larnaca popular to those
people with yachts, and so attracts many exclusive clients. For
those who want to explore the dry-land of Larnaca
there is the promenade which is packed with restaurants, cafes
as well as international shops.
The city was once called Kition in the days of the Old Testament,
and the ruins from these ancient times have been preserved. Much
of its diverse archaeology can be found in the two main museums.
Around the resort there is also much archaeology to be discovered,
some dating back from the Neolithic period.
Church of Ayios Lazaros
This church, build in the 9th century is devoted to St Lazarus,
and stands in the centre of Larnaca. It is an important religious
institute in Cyprus, and many come to worship here. Lazarus is
belived to have lived at the ancient Kition for around 30 years,
after he was resurrected from the dead by Jesus Christ. He was
ordained a bishop of Kition by St Barnabas and Mark. It was built
above what was thought to be Lazurus’ empty grave, whose finally
rested in Marseilles, in France. 8 days before the Greek Orthodox
Easter every year a wooden carving of Lazarus is paraded through
the street off the town of Larnaca.
Ancient Kition
The ancient Kition is set in the northwest of Larnaca, and presents
the remains of five temples, which date back to the 13th century
BC. The Phoenician Temple of Astarte is of main interest, which
was built over he remains of a Bronze Age temple. This is definitely
worth a visit if you want to know more about the cultural history
of Larnaca.
District Museum
This modern museum is just a short walk away form the town centre,
and contains many archaeological artifacts found in the Larnaca
area. Starting from the Neolithic period, to Roman period there
are many displays from the Kition, as well as other areas around
Larnaca. There are many ceramics, tools, coins and lamps, as well
as bone and scarabs to see, which all help you to understand what
life in Laranaca would have been like during these ancient periods..
