This ancient port city is now one of the most popular
holiday destinations in Portugal, as there are many cheap
hotels and cheap flights to Lagos. There
are the gorgeous sandy beaches, and visitors to can also enjoy
the town’s history. They can discover the history behind the port,
such as its use as a port from which many boats left to discover
the east.
However, an earthquake in 1775 destroyed many buildings, and so
few historic buildings remain. Customs House is one of the historic
buildings that remain. It is the building in which Europe’s first
slave market was conducted in 1441. The church of Igreja de Santo
Antonio also remains, and was restored in 1715 and embellished
with fantasy-inspired carvings. The municipal museum in the town
includes many interesting and varied artefacts from Roman to the
more modern periods.
The most beautiful beach is that of Meia Praia
which features sheltered beach coves. Praia de Dona Ana
is also very scenic, and is popular within the summer period.
Dolphin Safaris
Take a trip on the Dolphin Safari’s inflatable boat, which departs
from the Lagos Harbour. This is the perfect opportunity to see
the stunning coastline from the sea, as well as searching for
dolphins. Their reputation for finding dolphins is brilliant and
the boat itself is a great experience, as it is specially designed,
and is the only boat of its class in Europe.
Ponta da Piedade
A short drive or a longer walk away along the very edge of the
cliffs is the Ponta da Piedade. This beach holds the most beautiful
rock formations along the Algarve coast, and they are a must-see
for first time visitors to Portugal. These stunning rock formations
can be seen from the land, but the most amazing view is to be
seen by boat.
