Ephesus
This is one of the largest and most preserved ancient cities in
Turkey. This city was built with the harbour at its centre on
the Cayster River. It was used as one of the largest ports in
the area from the 2nd century B.C. This magnificent site was ruled
by Alexander the Great in the Hillinistic period and was the the
Capital of Roman Asia in 133 B.C, making this one of the richest
historical places in Turkey.
Caravanserai
This is one of the most dominating buildings within the harbour
in Kusadasi is the Caravanserai, which is a massive battlement
structure. Built in 1618 and restored in the 1060s, it is now
a hotel. To the southwest of this building is some of the 19th
century houses, which give an example of the older architecture
and culture.
Pigeon Island
Just west of the harbour lies a causeway which leads to the beautiful
island known as Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island). There you will
find the 13th century tower, which was once part of the Byzantine
castle, which was once a pirate’s lair in its history.
