Hersonissos is located on the north of the
island of Crete, and is one of the most developed resorts
on the island. It has many restaurants, bars and shops as well
as a large range of hotels to suit any budget. Hersonissos,
is favoured by the younger tourists, who want to enjoy the nightlife
in the many bars and clubs, and then relax on the beach during
the day. Catering for these holidaymakers is done throughout Hersonissos,
from the many golden beaches offering watersports, to the many
shops selling souvenirs and jewellery. However, if you want to
explore the local culture and history there are many attractions
nearby. Heraklion, which is located close, boasts an Archaeological
Museum. The Minoan Palace of Knossos and the Minoan Palace of
Malia are also close by, and are worth visiting for their history.
There are many buses to and from Heranklion, making it easy to
visit for the day. If you hire a car you will also be able to
explore the larger region. The near by villages of Ano
Hersonissos and Koutouloufari provide traditional buildings
and their own golden beaches, making for a great place in which
to explore Crete’s culture.

of their type. This museum is a good trip out, and provides much
information about both the cultural and historical history of
the area.
Koutouloufari
This resort is located overlooking Hersonissos, and is one of
the most beautiful resorts in the area. It combines both the old
and the new culture of Crete, with many picturesque houses and
its small streets. These streets house local restaurants, taverns
as well as many shops and boutiques. The village has its own shingle
beach just a short walk away which boasts clear warm waters.
