Hammamet, also known as the pride of the Tunisian
Riviera, is situated between the Mediterranean and the Sahara
desert. Tunis is also just 40miles away, perfect for a day trip.
Hammamet has become a cosmopolitan town, with its gorgeous beach,
marina and healing mineral baths, as well as the high-class hotels.
Hammamet was once a tranquil fishing village, but was bought to
life in the 1920s when people came in search of the beautiful
scenery and healing baths. It has now become a destination for
those who want to enjoy the richer lifestyle. Although there are
many nationalities that visit, and it has become a more vibrant
city, Hammamet still holds its natural charm and history.
Hammamet is still dominated by the 15th century medina and souk
(bazaar) where people come to sell their good, such as donkeys,
jewellery, carpets and brass. It is the perfect place for finding
a bargain, or just browsing around. The town’s baths are also
situated in the medina, and is surrounded by the busy cobbled
streets and ancient mosques.
Alongside this busy centre and the beautiful weather in
Hammomet, is the beautiful coastline which runs for 6
miles. It is adorned with clean golden sands and blue water, as
well as the colourful fishing boats that are still used. Just
south of the old town along the coast is Yasmine Hammamet,
Tunisia. This is a new development where there has been
a growth in luxury hotels and apartments, as well as water sports,
restaurants and entertainment venues on offer.
Medina
The Medina in Hammamet is encircled by walls dating back to the
15th century. It is a warren of small lanes and the souks which
line them display their merchandise to appeal to those walking
past. The most popular products to buy in Tunisia is embroider,
pottery, leather wares and carpets – although they’re overpriced,
you are allowed to haggle!.
Kasbah
The Kasbah in Hammamet is an ideal place to see the stunning views
over the town and harbour. It also houses a little and interesting
museum is worth a visit for the sake of its small but curious
museum.
Carthageland
This is the first theme park ever opened in Africa, and is worth
the experience. It is located next to the Medina Mediterranea
within Yasmine Hammamet, Tunisia. It is the perfect place for
a day out, especially with young children. It has many rides and
attractions to keep the whole family amused!.
