This small town, which boasts its own port, is located on the
site of an ancient city (Telmessos). Some remains of this city
still exist in Fethiye – a theatre and many rock
tombs. Fethiye is situated within the head of
a bay, which has a mass of islands set around it. This is a popular
destination, which makes up part of the well-known Turquoise Coast,
has beautiful waters and beaches. Although the resort does get
busy during the summer months, you can tell that the local charm
of Fethiye has not been affected. You may see goats being herded
and the smells of herbs and spices fill the air, especially on
a market day. This bazaar is the biggest in the area, and there
is many bargains to be had!
There are many ancient sites that are also worth visiting whilst
staying in Fethiye. The most fascinating are
the rock tombs, which were built around 4th century BC, and stand
above the city in the hills. The amphitheatre, from the Roman
period also stands next to the harbour as well as the medieval
castle remains that were built by St John’s Knights. The harbour
also boasts a large amount of bars and restaurants, which give
you a taste of the local cuisine and delicacies.
Around Fethiye are many small and private rocky
coves with sandy beaches. If you have a car, these are a perfect
place to relax in the sun. There are also many hills, cliffs and
small off-shore islands to explore, all making for a great trip
away from the beach. There are also many activities available,
including hiring a Gulet (a small yacht), which you can take around
the coastal waters. Oludeniz is also just 25minutes away, and
there is a frequent bus service. This small town offers many facilities
of its own, including parasailing, pedaloes, banana boats, diving
and water-skiing.
There is plenty to do for everyone, from relaxing on the beach
or in your Fethiye hotel, to having a go at a
water sport. Turkish flights are also becoming
cheaper, making this region more accessible than ever!
Rock
Tombs
These rock tombs are the most magnificent remains of the ancient
city of Telmessos. Their architecture makes them look like small
temples inlaid into the rock. The most famous is the Tomb of Amyntas,
which is from around 4th century B.C.
Ölüdeniz
This gorgeous bay, which is also known as the Dead Sea, is one
of the finest bathing places in Turkey. Its beaches have gorgeous
sand, and is set within the picturesque hills that are now a conservation
area.
Pinara
Pinara is set within the hills above Esen Ovasi, just southeast
of Fethiye. It was once a Lycian necropolis, which has more than
900 rock tombs and house tombs. The tombs have amazing architecture,
that was intricately done by the builders who were let down on
ropes into the vast caverns. The Royal Tomb, which has rock art
of an urban scene, is the most superb as this type of tomb is
rare in Lycia.
