Chania is the largest city on the western side
of Crete, and is certainly one of the most attractive.
Chania holds a lot of traditional charm, with many Venetian and
Turkish buildings muddled together around the harbour. Colourful
markets, craft shops, as well as restaurants serving local cuisine,
and a bustling town square makes this town a vibrant. There are
also many small lanes and streets that are dotted with tavernas,
cafes and small shops which provide a more peaceful environment
in which to relax. The buildings themselves look picturesque,
with wooden balconies and intricate stonework. The area around
the port is also interesting with its ancient buildings. It is
lined with many restaurants and bars providing local drinks and
cuisine, in the beautiful environment of Chania, Crete.
Holidays to Chania are affordable for everyone, and at
the end of the promenade is the hotel area, which has a large
variety of accommodation. Accommodation ranges from luxurious
Chania hotels to self-catering accommodation,
as well as many aparthotels.
Aside from the large depth of culture that surrounds Chania, there
are also some museums which provide a historical aspect. The Archaeological
museum and the Naval Museums are the most popular, with many artifacts
and historical stories to tell. A well-known walk can also be
taken through the Samaria Gorge, which provides stunning scenery,
and is a great day trip.
Gavalokhóri
(Gavalohori)
The traditional settlement at Gavalokhóri is 26km from
Khania. It is nestled within olive and oak trees, and its name
comes from Philip Gavalas who settled there between 1090 and 1182.
Within this settlement there is a historical and folklore museum,
providing visitors with knowledge about the history of the area.
The Women’s Agricultural Cooperative is also located in the towns
square, which is the perfect place to buy local products or find
information.
Naval
Museum
Suitably located next to the harbour, which is of Venetian origin,
this museum displays many exhibits from the islands history. Well
worth a visit!
Aptera
Thiscity, which was once one of the most important in Crete, is
just a 15km journey from Khania. It was important around 7th century
B.C. and this is evident through the architecture that remains.
The city walls still stand, as well as the temple to Demeter,
a Roman theatre and the massive vaulted cisterns of the Roman
period. All of these monuments have been well-preserved, and provide
a fascinating insight into ancient life.
