Antigua is one of the oldest villages on the island, and still
maintains this old charm even though it has grown to a population
of 3000 people, and has become such a holiday hot-spot!
The pinnacle of the old town centre is the stunning church, Cruz
de los Caldos. It is surrounded by bushes and trees, and is next
to the village square. This provides an atmosphere of tranquillity
within the busy resort. The church is usually open to the general
public most mornings, and occasionally in the afternoons.
If culture is what you’re interested in Antigua’s windmill is
fully restored, and is open as a tourist attraction. There is
also a craft shop selling arts and crafts made by local people.
Antigua is a reasonably quiet village, but includes many local
amenities such as a post office. However, this means that Antigua
is the perfect place in which to relax on holidays in
Fuerteventura.
There is accommodation to suit every budget from discount
holidays to Antigua, to luxury accommodation. This means
that everyone is able to enjoy a pleasurable stay in Antigua!
Virgen
de la Antigua church
This small church was has been kept by a person who lives in the
adjoining house, which still forms part of the church today. The
newest section of the church dates from the 18th century, but
the original part was put up at the end of the 15th Century in
honour of the Virgen de Antigua.
The
artesian center and mill houses
The artesian centre and mill houses are a local museum and workshop.
There is also a craft shop selling local products. In May or June
there is a festival where folklore groups and craftsmen come to
show their skills and sell their crafts. This makes a pleasant
cultural day out away from the beach.
