Situated on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, Antalya
is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Turkey.
With its stunning views and beautiful buildings, as well as the
old Kaleiçi area that is enclosed by Roman walls, Antalya
is a perfect place to relax. Within the landscape is the symbol
of Antalya, which is the Yivli Minaret, which
is dated from the 3rd century. There is a well-known archaeological
museum, which houses some of the best collections in the whole
of Turkey.
Antalya’s shoreline is also known as the Turkish Riviera,
with small coves, ancients cities as well as harbours and seaside
towns. The sandy beaches and clear blue waters also add to the
picturesque setting, which is one of the most popular in Turkey.
The city of Antalya provides a fantastic base form which to explore
the Riviera, and its small villages as well as the waterfalls
and Roman ruins, and with many Antalya hotels on offer, there
is something to suit everyone. Just a 30min drive from Antalya
is Aspendos, which holds one of the finest examples of a Roman
theatre. As well as these archaeological attractions, there are
many facilities for visitors, such as the Taurus Mountain range,
which hosts international volleyball, triathlons and canoeing
competitions.
Turkey, Antalya beach holidays
have been made available to everyone within recent years. Antalya
hotels are suitable for any budget – from luxury to standard self-catering
apartments there is something for any pocket. There are also many
cheap flights to Antalya, which fly daily, making
this stunning resort even more available.
Olympos and the Fires of Chimaera
This ancient site dates back to the Hellenistic times, when it
was the important Lycian city. It became famous as a place of
worship, and many would travel here to worship Vulcan, the God
of Fire. It is situated on a bay, which has golden sands. The
Ulupinar River separates the ruins, which include bath houses,
temples and tombs. There is a bus from Antalya that takes one
and a half hours. It is a place where you are able to spend the
day, and is well worth visiting.
Museum of Archeology and Ethnography
A definite visit for those wanting to explore the heritage of
the area is the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography. It is located
just 2km form the city centre, and provides a large cross-section
of all the periods in history
from the area. The museum spans from the Neolithic to the Bronze
Age, as well as Roman times. The gallery containing divine statues
is a definite must. Do set aside a large period of time to visit
this museum, as you are bound to get absorbed into its large galleries
and displays!
Theater
of Aspendos
Aspendos, near to Antalya, is well-known for is theatre if antiquity,
which is amongst the best preserved theatres in Turkey. Build
around the second century AD the theatre would hold the capacity
of 15,000 people. It is still used for festivals and performances
today, which are worth catching if you are able. Next to the stage
there is a small museum, which houses some of the masks and tickets
made out of clay which date back to when the theatre was originally
used. Near to this theatre lies the remains of a basilica, and
agora as well as one of the largest aqueducts in Anatolia.
