Alvor was once a quiet coastal village, and
has now become a fashionable holiday destination. However, this
growth in tourism hasn’t meant an increase in buildings as this
is minimal and has been done in keeping with the historical buildings.
Most of Alvor’s streets are lines with small bars and cafes as
well as restaurants. The smaller streets however, are also worth
exploring as they retain the charm of the old fishing village
that once was there.
The village itself looks over a stunning natural lagoon which
then opens onto the sea. Running along the sea is the sandy beach,
and some smaller coves which are secluded underneath the cliffs.
The beautiful Parish Church is a great example of the culture
of the village and it’s past. Built in 16th Century it was nearly
destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, and was been rebuilt in a
similar style.
Alvor holidays would not be complete without
a visit to some of the other resorts close-by. Within close proximity
of this beautiful village are a number of other resorts which
have many attractions and facilities which are worth visiting.
The commercial town of Portimão is a shopper’s paradise,
and the popular sandy beaches of Praia da Rocha and Praia da Vau
are also near.
Alvor is a perfect place to relax and unwind in a sun-drenched
location. However, it is not a place that is exclusive, and there
are hotels and packages to suit every budget - from a luxurious
holiday to a cheap holiday. Algarve
holidays are available for everyone!
Monchique and Foia
These are the highest points on the island, and make a great day
out walking. It is a small challenge to reach the top, and it
is not recommended for children. Along the way there are many
people selling fresh spring water and local produce, such as honey
cake. Once at the top the views are stunning, and provide views
far across the beautiful island.
Golf
Many golfers come on holidays in Portugal every year for the golf
courses. The Algarve is particularly good, offering around 30
golf courses, which are of excellent standard.
