Alicante is located on the east of Spain,
and is central to the popular region of the Costa Blanca. Alicante
boasts gorgeous scenery, as well as a large cultural history.
It has a very unique African flavour, as there are women wearing
caftans, and many people selling African wooden goods. The historical
district is filled with Baroque buildings, and the history of
the seaport town can still be seen here. The main street in Alicante
is known as Rambla, which is lined with both palm trees and shops.
There are also many restaurants, cafes and ice-cream parlours,
which serve the local drink horchata, which is made of almonds.
The shops here are tailor-made for the holidaymakers, with many
souvenirs on sale. However, there are local shops and boutiques
to tempt you. There are also parks and gardens, and the marbled
paved plaza and the harbour add a cosmopolitan flavour to the
city.
Many people come to Alicante for its gorgeous beaches, in particular
San Juan. All the beaches are lined with sand, and have warm blue
waters of the Mediterranean. Alicante is well-known for its own
package holidays, but with its international airport
many other holidaymakers use this airport every year. During the
last week of June every year there is the Fiesta of Saint Joan,
and visitors and locals alike are encouraged to celebrate.
With its beaches and facilities Alicante is a popular choice for
many people seeking the sun. Hotels in Alicante
vary in price, meaning that there is something affordable for
everyone. There are also many cheap flights.
Alicante is an ideal place to find the sun on holiday.
Castell
de Santa Barbara
This magnificent castle dominates over Alicante. Originally built
in 400BC, and later used by the Romans and the Moors, it has been
well-preserved. The fortress itself is large, with a moat, drawbridge,
tunnel, cisterns and dungeons to explore. The tower and keep are
the most impressive parts, which lay completely intact. Up on
the fortress you also get an amazing view of Alicante and the
bay.
Elche
This palm forest is a beautiful site, and is located just 12miles
inland from Alicante. It is Europe’s only palm forest, which forms
a pleasant surrounding for the city of Elche. The city itself
also boasts parks and gardens, as well shops and restaurants.
Isla
Tabarca
This tiny islet is located close to Alicante, and has become a
popular place to take a day trip. It has a peaceful fishing village,
as well as an old fort and some beautiful restaurants. The beach
is rocky and has blue waters which surround several inlets and
coves. It takes around an hour by ferry which can be taken from
the dock in Explanada d'Espanya in Alicante centre.
