Agios Nikolaos (or Áyios Nikólaos)
is now well-known as a cosmopolitan resort. It has its own harbour,
which is lined by quality restaurants and bars serving the fantastic
meals of the local cuisine. The days of nightclubs and bars are
now a thing of the past within this busy town. It is perfect for
couples, as well as families, who want to explore the island.
There are many historical sites nearby, and the Archaeological
Museum within the town displays the vast artifacts that have been
found in the area. Agios Nikolaos’ most interesting feature is
the deep pool within the harbour, which is called Lake Voulismeni,
which has many myths attached to it. Visitors can also take excursions
out of the resort to explore places such as the small islet Spinalónga,
which holds fortress ruins, as well as fascinating story the last
leper colony in Europe.

Lake Voulismeni
Lake Voulismeni is a former sweetwater small lake, which was later
linked to sea. It is situated in the centre of Agios Nikolaos.
It is circular, and has a depth of 64m, and is known to the locals
as ‘the lake’. Legends say that Athena, the Greek Goddess bathes
in it, and local legend is that it is bottomless.
Vai
This picturesque settlement has 5,000 palm trees, and provides
a stunning location for a walk. It also boasts its own beach with
crystal waters and golden sand.
