Hurghada, was once a small fishing village, and has now blossomed into a vibrant resort, known throughout the world. It is located on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, and because of this it is perfect for its diving and snorkeling. It is popular with European tourists who want to soak up the sun in this idyllic setting. Mons Porphyrites
Mons Porphyrites was once an important quarry in the Roman period.
It is set within the Eastern Desert, where for thre centuries
the Romans mined Imperial Porphyry – a beautiful purple rock.
The emperors of the time love this rock, which has fine grains
and also has some white crystals. The colour, and the rock itself
soon became the symbol for royalty and emperors wanted exclusive
rights to it. Nowadays you are able to visit this mine, as well
as find your own piece of royal rock.
Watersports
Hurghada is well-known for its water sports, including fishing,
sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. The most popular however
is diving and snorkeling. The underwater gardens and coral reefs
make this the perfect location for diving. However if you do not
want to get your feet wet, there are also many glass-bottomed
boat companies, where you can enjoy the underwater delights while
keeping dry! Hotels and other companies also offer banana boats,
pedal boats as well as canoes.
